People have been collecting decorative plates since they were first designed and used.
The tea and dinner plate market started to heat up during the turn of the century when they were able to manufacturer a large amount of the blue and white plates that were very popular back then. Potteries became famous because of their sophisticated designs for their dinnerware, a good example is the Mason company. A good example of this are the Delft ware, which is from the 18th century. These are very valuable in the collectables market. Spode and Royal Worcester are examples of potteries that used renown artists of the day to hand paint interesting designs on their products which weren't necessarily to be used for everyday use but on a purely decorative basis.
These hand painted decorative plates became much more widely available to the public with the creation of transfer printing and the use of manufacturing techniques in the early 19th century. An ordinary collector would never be able to afford these earlier plates, the most valuable ones are the hand painted kind. You can find some plates from the early days which are much more affordable and can easily be found. There are many choices to go with as a collector, something like a commemorative plate from the Victorian era or maybe a modern plate from the Danbury Mint. It's always a personal choice, but what to choose is always hard but it's something fun to do. There are all sorts of worldwide potteries out there such as Dresden, Derby, Clarice Cliff, Belleek, Blue and White and Art Deco. These all produce decorative plates that are perfect for the collector. The other option is to choose a theme and build a collection based on birds, commemorative, places, fish, flowers, horses, dog or even cats.
